Roberts, Fox & Santer Aerial Show Leads Big Reds Past Marietta 26-21

MARIETTA, OH - Relative newcomers Aaron Roberts and Dan Fox joined veteran senior Matt Santer to put on an aerial show here Friday night at Don Drumm Field as the Parkersburg Big Reds held on to post a 26-21 victory over their ancient rivals, the Tigers of Marietta.
In the 108th meeting of the two Ohio River neighbors, junior quarterback Aaron Roberts showed he has the arm to make Big Red fans forget about other PHS signal callers as he threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns to lead his team to its second victory in three tries this season.
Roberts, a junior who missed most of last year with a knee injury, completed 16 of 23 passes in amassing the ninth highest single-game passing yardage total in school history. His four touchdowns fell one short of the record set last year by Alex Ash but it did make him the 11th quarterback to throw four TDs in a single game.
Meanwhile, another newcomer making an impact was sophomore Dan Fox, who last week tied the school record with 10 receptions in a single game. The speedy Fox caught three touchdown passes against the Tigers, becoming just the eighth PHS player to record that many TD receptions and the first ever 10th grader to accomplish the feat.
But just as important was the return to the lineup of captain Matt Santer, who was expected to be out for several more weeks with an injury but responded so well to treatment and worked so hard to recover that he was given the okay to play against Marietta and responded with seven receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown while making four tackles and breaking up four passes on defense.
It was the fourth victory in a row for PHS over Marietta and the 75th win against 27 defeats and six ties in one of the oldest high school football rivalries in the country .The loss was the second in three tries for Marietta.
The Big Reds ran just four offensive plays in the first quarter as Marietta dominated but were held out of the end zone when a 35 yard field goal try was wide life at the 5:15 mark.
But as they had done last week in their loss to county rival Warren, the Tigers did get on the board first as Anthony Kimbrough hit Quinton Coffield over the middle with a 66 yard pass and run play with 9:36 left in the first half.
But as PHS likes to do the response came quickly with a five-play, 80 yard drive for a touchdown. a 21-yard scramble by Roberts and a 40 yard run up the sidelines by Chandler Hamilton set up a Roberts to Fox pass for the final nine yards as the 7:20 mark of the second quarter. Cody Roney's extra point tied the game at 7-all.
With only 1:14 remaining the half, the quick-striking Big Reds were able to cover 72 yards in just four plays and took only 50 seconds. Roberts found Santer deep over the middle the lanky receiver hauled it in to complete a 51 yard touchdown play just before the intermission. Roney's PAT attempt was low and blocked.
The third quarter was a battle of punts and penalties (there were 22 flags in the game with PHS collecting 12 for 143 yards and the home team getting 10 for 97) before things got exciting again in the final 12 minutes.
Marietta drove to the Parkersburg six yard line for a first and goal with just over a minute left in the third period but the Tigers fumbled the ball away on a dive play with Austin Alatore recovering. the Big Reds then put together a 95 yard drive (which actually covered 103 yards with penalty yardage added) for what was thought to be the clinching touchdown.
A 40 yard shovel pass to Hamilton was one of the big plays on that possession with the touchdown coming on a 41 yard bomb to Fox with 10:14 left in the game. The extra point conversion pass failed and PHS had a 19-7 lead.
Marietta ran off 12 plays and got one first down on a pass interference penalty. But the Tigers ran out of downs on the PHS 49 with 6:14 left to play.
The Big Reds immediately went to work, getting 18 yards on a screen pass to Adam Lindamood with the senior putting on one of his patented spinning, second effort, tackle-breaking runs to set up a quick toss to Fox for the final 11 yards and a 26-7 lead with just 4:09 on the clock.
But the Tigers made things more than a little interesting as Kimbrough passed his team to the end zone in just two minutes with the final 18 yards coming on a pass over the middle to Jaron Binegar with 2:09 remaining.
The home team then recovered an onside kick and went 49 yards in 81 seconds with Kimbrough finding John Henry for the final 15 stripes with 39.4 seconds left to play. The PAT kick made it 26-21.
Marietta then recovered its second straight onside kick at the Parkersburg 44 but misfired on four straight passes and giving the ball back with 12.6 ticks remaining. Roberts twice took a knee to secure the hard-fought victory.
Lindamood and Skyler Terrell were the top tacklers for PHS with nine stops each while Lantz Hoyler had seven tackles including two sacks and a fumble recovery.
