Switzer Accounts For 7 TDs as PHS Falls 54-17

Ryan Switzer touched the ball only 11 times but had a hand in seven touchdowns as fourth-ranked George Washington used big plays to beat Parkersburg 54-17 Saturday afternoon at Laidley Field.

Switzer, the shoe-in for the Kennedy Award again, had eight rushing attempts for 235 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 52, 44 and 63 yards (all in the first half), ran an interception back 90 yards for a score, caught a pass for five yards and a touchdown and even threw one pass, for three yards - and a touchdown. His TD reception came wit 7:54 left to play and GW already ahead 48-10.

It was a strange game in serveral respects for Parkersburg. The Big Reds ran 75 offensive plays to just 26 for the winners. The total offensive yardage for PHS was 291, just 50 yards less than GW. Only three different players touched the ball offensively for PHS, Adam Lindamood, Aaron Roberts and Cameron McCoy. Time of possession was 38:14 to 7:53 in favor of the losing team. PHS had 19 first downs to just nine for GW.

Lindamood actually out-gained Switzer on the ground, rushing for a whopping 239 yards - but took 41 more carries. His 49 attempts was a career highs for the senior running back, who pushed his season's total to 1,441 yards (8th best single season mark in school history). Lindamood also ran for two touchdowns, giving him 16 for the year and 198 points for his career (12th best in history). He finished his career with 2,704 yards for sixth place on the all-time list (right behind his grandfather, Fred Earley).

Roberts rushed 15 times for 30 yards and threw 11 passes with two completions, both to McCoy, for 22 yards. He was intercepted three times, two of them being returned for touchdowns.

GW scored on the third play of the game when Switzer took a toss and swept around left end from 52 yards away with just 1:27 gone in the game.

But PHS came back to go ahead by a 7-6 score. Starting from their own 20 the Big Reds picked up two first downs, one on a fourth and one play from their own 29 yards line (obviously showing they had nothing to lose by gambling). But forced to punt from theirown 45, Kyle Foster's kick went to the GW 27, where Switzer fumbled the ball away with PHS recovering on the 27.

Lindamood ran three times for a first down at the 10 before Roberts gained five more. Two more rushes by Lindamood produced the touchdown with 3:56 on the clock. Cody Roney's kick made it 7-6 in favor of PHS.

After forcing GW to punt on its next possession, PHS took over on the Big Red 35 yard line and picked up a first down at the 48 before Roberts was intercepted by Austin Giacomo at the GW 44. Four plays later Switzer broke loose again, this time sprinting in from 44 yards out with 11:15 on a second quarter clock to put the Pats on top 12-7.

The Big Reds moved to midfield on their next possession but on fourth down at the GW 46, Roberts' pass to two wide-open Big Red receivers fell between them incomplete and GW took over on downs.

Again PHS held and the Big Reds got the ball on their own 25 with 8:44 left in the half. The Big Reds moved to a first down at the GW 34 but Roberts tried to go over the middle and Switzer picked off the pass at his own 10 yard line and out-ran the would-be tacklers all the way to the end zone to make it 18-7. The two-point conversion was good for a 20-7 lead and the flood gates opened in the last two minutes before intermission.

Switzer broke away for a 63 yard TD run with 1:59 on the clock and with just 40 seconds left Zach Malone intercepted another Roberts' pass and returned it 59 yards for another touchdown to run the halftime score to 34-7.

PHS got a 43 yard field goal by Roney midway through the third quarter to make it 34-10 but Switzer did his thing one more time, from 44 yards away, just two plays later and it was 41-10.

PHS then fumbled the ball away on its own three yard line and the Pats scored immediately as Switzer threw a halfback pass to 6-foot-5 Jordan Clay to make it 48-10.

Roney had a 47 yard field goal attempt blocked and GW elected to practice its passing attack, going 80 yards on two passes plus a penalty to make it first and goal from the give. Switzer then caught a pass for his sixth TD of the game with just under eight minutes to play.

The final Big Red TD came as PHS ran Lindamood 11 straight times to move the ball 57 yards into the end zone against the first-string GW defense with just 1:53 left in the game.
