S. Charleston Spoils Senior, Swisher Night

South Charleston's speed spoiled Senior Night, Swisher Night and the state playoff hopes of the Big Reds as the visiting Black Eagles turned in five plays of 50 or more yards and four of them resulted in touchdowns en route to a 41-21 victory.
The win keeps South Charleston's playoff hopes alive with a final regular season record of 6-4 while ending Parkersburg hopes with a 4-5 record going into next week's season final at George Washington.
Prior to the game the PHS seniors were recognized and the Swisher brothers, Nick and Mark, were inducted into the PHS Football Hall of Fame.
Overshadowed in the loss was another outstanding game by senior Adam Lindamood. Lindamood ran for a whopping 267 yards on 40 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught a pass for 10 yards. His career yardage total was pushed to 2,465 and he passed Nick Swisher for seventh place on the all-time PHS rushing list. His 267 yards were the seventh highest total ever for a Big Red back and his two touchdowns gives him 198 career points, 12th on the all-time list.
But Lindamood and the running of junior quarterback Aaron Roberts were the few bright spots for PHS. Roberts picked up 90 yards rushing on 14 carries and scored once on a great run on which he reached the end zone from 11 yards away with second and third efforts. However, Roberts threw the ball only nine times, completed just three for 15 yards and had two intercepted.
Meanwhile, South Charleston threw for 234 yards as freshman Kendre Grier completed 10 of 13 with three going for touchdowns. Grier, who had throws of 50 and 69 yards to Kevin Forrest, also had a 58 yard touchdown run himself. The Eagles had 184 yards on the ground for a total of 418 yards on the night.
PHS took the opening kickoff and drove to the South Charleston 26 yard line but Roberts had his pass tipped and then intercepted by Chrisjamar Perkins, who ran it back 55 yards to the PHS 22. Three plays later Grier found Marquel Hampton for a seven yard scoring play with 6:41 left in the first quarter. Jacob Gordon kicked the first of his five extra points on the night.
On their second possession the Big Reds again rode the running of Lindamood and Roberts to the SC 40 but on Roberts' first pass attempt of the drive he was picked off by Forrest, who ran it back to the PHS three yard line. A penalty on the return put the ball back on the Eagles' 29 but it took just two plays for the visitors to score again as Grier scrambled free to score from 58 yards away with 1:02 left in the first quarter.
A 50 yard run by Lindamood on the Big Reds' first offensive play following that score set the stage for an almost all-Lindamood drive of 86 yards for a PHS touchdown. The "Mood" carried on eight of the 10 plays and went over the right side from nine yards out with 7:41 left in the half. Cody Roney's kick made it 14-7.
But South Charleston used the arm of Grier, or more specifically the hands and legs of Trevond Reese to respond with another touchdown. The Eagles' drove 80 yards on nine plays with Reese making three receptions for 54 of the yards. Ken Haynes got the TD on a one yard plunge with 4:15 remaining before the half. The kick failed but SC was still up 20-7.
The Big Reds looked like they would respond and Lindamood and Roberts again ran the ball well, moving it from the 30 yard line all the way to a first and goal on the SC two. But, running from the Wildcat formation, Lindamood lost two yards, then was stopped twice for no gain before Roberts tried to fake a dive and run outside only to be stopped on the one on fourth down with 13 seconds left before the intermission.
South Charleston scored two quick touchdowns to start the second half and take a 34-7 advantage. The Eagles drove 80 yards on four plays with Forrest beating the PHS secondary deep for a 50 yard grab for the first score. Then Reese pulled one of South Charleston's favorite plays on a punt return by acting like he was going to let the ball roll dead only to pick it up at the last second and sprint to the sidelines where the Eagles had a waiting wall of blockers on what proved to be an 84 yard punt return touchdown.
But PHS showed some character by driving for a touchdown, taking nine plays to go 69 yards with Lindamood carrying seven times for 58 of the yards, including the final three as he followed the blocking of Corey Burdette, Austin Alatorre and D.J. Corazza into the end zone to make it 34-14 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.
The Big Red defense finally held South Charleston on downs at the SC 44 and PHS scored again on a short drive that saw Lindamood break off one run for 23 yards and then Roberts kept the ball around right end from the 11 and used sheer willpower to bull the final few yards into the end zone and cut the lead to 34-21 on the last play of the third period.
Again PHS stopped the Eagles' offense, forcing a punt, but could not generate anything and also had to punt. For a short while it appeared the Big Reds would stop SC again but on third and 11 from his own 31, Grier dropped back and heaved a bomb to Forrest, who once again got behind the Big Red defenders. He hauled in the pass and sprinted the rest of the way to complete a 69 yard scoring play that pushed the lead to its final margin of 41-21.
