BECKLEY - Adam Lindamood had a big game with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns here Friday night but the Big Reds suffered a 30-22 setback at the hands of the Beckley Flying Eagles.
The Eagles scored three times in the third quarter and held on to hand the Big Reds their fourth loss of the season going into next week's bye on the schedule. Beckley quarterback Andrew Johnson and Ramon Edwards combined for three touchdowns and 241 yards on the ground and 92 in the air to pace the home team to victory. Edwards had 170 yards on just 11 carries, including an 80 yard TD run in the third period, while Johnson ran 16 times for 71 yards and passed for 93 yards with seven completions in 17 attempts.
While Lindamood was having his usual big game on real grass with touchdown runs of one, one and 28 yards on 30 carries, Beckley was using its speed to amass 396 yards in total offense compared to 356 for PHS.
Lindamood's 166 yards pushed him into eighth place on the all-time PHS rushing list as his 2,198 career total betters the mark of 2,095 held by Ryan Holbert and puts him just 11 yards behind Larry Rhodes, who stands eighth on the list with 2,209. His three touchdowns raised his career point total to 186 and elevates him past Jim Bargeloh and into 17th place, just two points behind Bill Bell (1939) and his older brother, PHS assistant coach Joey Lindamood, who are tied for 16th place with 188 points.
The Big Reds were severely hampered early in the second quarter when Chandler Hamilton suffered a concussion on the sixth play of that period after carrying the ball five times out of the six plays to start that quarter. He gained 40 yards on a drive which started from the 10 yard line and wound up with a touchdown being scored by Lindamood on a plunge up the middle. Hamilton ran for 10 yards around left end to the Beckley 10 yard line before he was hit on the sidelines in a helmet-to-helmet tackle that drove him into the downs marker, which was directly on the sidelines and was not dropped until it was too late to avoid contact. Beckley was whistled for a personal foul on the play which resulted in a five yard penalty but Hamilton, who is also among the leading tacklers on defense for the Big Reds, was out for the game and now must await further evaluation.
Kwante Johnson had a 37 yard reception from Aaron Roberts on that scoring drive, which pulled PHS to within 8-7 with 9:09 left before halftime.
Johnson finished with four catches on the night for 77 yards and was the leading tackler on defense with eight solo stops.
Beckley scored on its first possession in just four plays, thanks to a 58 yard run by Edwards. Johnson did the honors with 9:58 on the first period clock with a nine yard run.
PHS got on the board on its second drive thanks to the running of Hamilton but the Big Reds had only three possessions in the entire first half, Beckley threatened at the end of the first half, driving to the six yard line but threw incomplete into the end zone on the final play of the half.
The third quarter started with PHS using the running of Lindamood to drive to the Beckley 14 but Cody Roney missed a 32 yard field goal with 8:59 on the clock as his kick had the distance but was just wide right.
Taking over on the 20, Beckley needed just one play to score as Edwards took an inside handoff and sprinted around left end 80 yards to the end zone. The two-point conversion run was stopped on a tackle by Chase Stanley.
PHS responded with a short field drive of 38 yards on seven plays with Roberts hitting Johnson over the middle for a gain of 23 to set up Lindamood's run behind the blocking of D.J. Corazza for the TD with 5:32 on the clock. Roney's kick tied the game at 14-all.
A 39 yard kickoff return by Edwards and a 15 yard facemask penalty against PHS helped Beckley score again quickly, going 49 yards on six plays with Johnson going over untouched from the four yard line with 3:28 remaining in the quarter.
The Big Reds fumbled the ball away on their next try and Beckley's big tackle Michael Bailey picked the ball up and rambled 44 yards to the PHS 15 yard line before being brought down. Two plays later Cole Williams ran it into the end zone and the two-point conversion run made it 30-14 with just 52.6 seconds remaining in the third period.
PHS appeared to answer that score immediately as Dan Fox returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown but a chop block penalty brought the ball back to the Big Red 15 yard line. Still, the Big Reds were able to put together an 85 yard drive that took eight plays and just over three minutes. Lindamood scored on a 28 yard run in which he bulled over two would-be tacklers on his way to the end zone. The conversion pass from Roberts to Fox made it 30-22 with 9:34 left to play.
Edwards had an 86 yard kickoff return up the middle nullified by a penalty but Beckley was still able to run over four minutes off the clock before finally punting it to the PHS seven yard line.
The Big Reds got two first downs but ran out of downs with 1:44 remaining on their own 36 yard line. Although they got the ball back four plays later on the 28, they were able to complete only one pass and threw and interception on the Beckley 16 in a last-ditch throw.
