Third-Ranked Cabell Midland Cruises Past Big Reds By 49-10 Score

The third-ranked Cabell Midland Knights unleashed a crushing ground game and cruised to a 49-10 victory over the Big Reds before a season-opening crowd at Stadium Field.

The Knights of second year head coach Luke Salmons ran their record to 2-0 and showed why they are considered one of the top contenders for state championship laurels this season in Class AAA. Meanwhile, PHS dropped to 1-1 by failing to come up with any defensive stops and hurt themselves offensively with two fumbles and several dropped passes.

Steve Matthews, the unheralded member of Cabell's backfield of 1,000 yard rushers, led the way for the visitors with three touchdowns and finished with 137 yards on 11 carries. Returning starter Lowell Farley finished with 182 yards on 12 carries including a 98-yard run from scrimmage in the waning minutes of the first quarter that seemed to deflate the Big Reds' enthusiasm.

In all the Knights finished with 419 yards rushing on 37 carries and had 545 yards in total offense as coach Salmons elected to work on his passing game after building a comfortable four-touchdown lead. Parkersburg had 296 yards in total offense, 129 on the ground and 167 through the air as Aaron Roberts attempted 43 passes but completed just 19.

PHS sophomore wide receiver Dan Fox tied the school record for catches in a single game with 10 for 99 yards but dropped what would have been the record-setting catch with 16 seconds left.

Adam Lindamood finished with 83 yards rushing on 17 attempts including an amazing 33 yard touchdown run.

Early in the fourth quarter with Cabell Midland's first string defense still on the field, Roberts ran an option to his left and at the last-second pitched the ball to a trailing Lindamood. Twice the senior standout spun out of would-be tackles on the sideline, barely keeping his balance and continuing toward the goal line. At about the 15 he made a sharp cut-back toward the middle of the field and scored standing up.

Chandler Hamilton carried just four times but had 54 yards rushing for the Big Reds.

The other Big Red points came on a 38 yard field goal by Cody Roney in the second quarter.

Both teams punted on their first possessions but Midland then scored on its next five tries. The first TD came on an 11-play drive, all but one coming on the ground.

PHS had to punt on its second possession and Kyle Foster booted the ball 59 yards to the four yard line where Hamilton made an open-field tackle of Midland's Dave Goydosz at the two yard line. But on the first play, Farley went over left guard and tackle and burst up the middle to go 98 yards for a touchdown with 2:27 left in the first quarter.

On their next series, the Knights went even farther, going 99 yards after Foster again punted 59 yards this time to the one yard line, where Hamilton downed the ball after dodging a block attempt by Gaydosz. But eight plays later they scored on Matthews' second TD. Five of the plays were more than 10 yards in length.

The Big Reds made it easy for the visitors on their next series as Roberts fumbled the ball away on the PHS 40 and two plays later the Knights were in the end zone again to make it 28-0 after the extra point kick.

A 37 yard pass from Theodore Pettit to Farley set up the fifth TD of the half and the Knights were able to tack on two more scores in the second 24 minutes, one with reserves in the contest.
