Big Reds Get 38-35 Homecoming Victory; Roberts & Johnson Hook Up For 3 TDs

Finally notching their first home victory of the season, the Parkersburg Big Reds did it on homecoming by holding off Riverside 38-35 behind the three touchdown connection combination of Aaron Roberts and Kwante Johnson.
Adam Lindamood had another big game for the Big Reds with a touchdown and 167 yards rushing while Chandler Hamilton had 78 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Cody Roney kicked a crucial 34 yard field goal with 1:45 left in the game.
Roberts hit PHS newcomer Johnson on passes covering 53, eight and 12 yards to account for three of the Big Reds' five scores on the night as they upped their overall record to 4-2 while dropping Riverside to 1-4. Roberts tried just 13 passes as the Big Red running game did some serious damage with 272 yards on 46 attempts but the PHS junior was accurate with nine completions for 149 yards. Thus the Big Reds finished with 421 yards in total offense and 24 first downs on the night.
Lindamood carried 25 times for his second straight big rushing game while Hamilton had 14 attempts and Roberts came with 27 net yards on seven key carries. Dan Fox and Dylan Thomas each caught two passes on the night for 38 and 33 yards respectively.
Riverside threw for a whopping 376 yards as quarterback Trevor Rumberg completed 21 of 31 passes for two touchdowns and one interception. Rumberg had a great night in all facets of the game as he rushed for three scores and picked up 55 yards on 10 attempts while also being the leading tackler in the game on defense with 12.
The Big Reds scored on three of their first four possessions in the game and got a break at the very beginning when Riverside fumbled on the opening kickoff return with Hamilton recovering on the Warriors' 34 yard line. PHS then put together an All-Lindamood drive with the senior standout carrying the ball six straight times to reach the end zone from the six with just 3:04 gone off the clock.
Thomas ended Riverside's first real offensive series with an interception on the Parkersburg four yard line and the Big Reds quickly put another touchdown on the board, going 96 yards (actually 98 because of a penalty on the first play which moved the ball back from the four to the two yard line. This time it was with a large dose of Hamilton to get things started as the junior speedster carried on four of the first five plays and gained 39 yards. A six yard pass to Fox was in the middle of those runs which set up a deep TD strike from Roberts to Johnson who was racing deep over the middle. He caught the ball around the 10 and appeared to be tackled at the three but some how dove into the end zone for the touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Roney's kick made it 14-0.
Riverside, which came into the game averaging over 29 points per game, finally got untracked with a 69-yard, seven-play drive that ended with Rumberg ran in from the nine with 9:08 on the clock. On the extra point attempt the Warriors faked the kick and Rumberg passed to Aaron Halstead for the two-point conversion which would make things very interesting the rest of the game.
The Big Reds were forced to punt on their next possession and Riverside quickly took the lead when Rumberg threw an 83 yard bomb to Marcus Reed for the touchdown and Derik Chestnut then kicked the extra point to put the visitors on top 15-14 with 6:50 left in the first half.
But the Big Reds calmly regained the lead with a 66-yard drive that took nine plays and 4:13. A 32-yard pass from Roberts to Fox was the big play that set up Roberts' loft to Johnson, who out-leaped the Riverside defender in the left corner of the end zone for the touchdown. The two-point conversion pass attempt failed and PHS was clinging to a 20-15 lead at the half.
Tyler Broadwater and Sarah Rudolph were crowned King and Queen of Homecoming during the intermission.
PHS then came out and got some breathing room by driving 66 yards again, this time on eight plays with Roberts coming up with a big 18 yard carry and then passing for 16 yards to Thomas to put the ball on the Riverside 13. After an eight yard run by Lindamood it was Hamilton following the blocks of Lindamood and D.J. Carozza into the end zone for the final five yards with 8:34 on the third quarter clock. Roney's kick made it 27-15.
However, less the two and a half minutes later it was a one possession game again as Riverside took just six plays to score and that included a seven yard tackle for a loss by Lindamood and Hamilton on the first play of the series. Rumberger hit Reed for 18 and then Damarrie Lain executed an end-around pass to Reed for 38 more yards. After Rumberg hit Lain for 18 more yards, the Warriors were knocking on the door at the 11 yard line. Two plays later Rumberg did the honors on a sneak and the ensuing PAT kick cut the lead to five again at 27-22.
PHS then fumbled the ball away on its next series with Riverside recovering near midfield. A great catch by Reed over two PHS defenders was good for 33 yards and put the ball on the five yard line. After a five yard penalty moved the ball back, Rumberg ran the option to perfection, keeping it to reach the end zone and put his team up by a point at 28-27. The Warriors tried to pass for the two-point conversion but Lantz Hoyler made the stop to keep the deficit at one point.
It was time to respond and PHS did so with flair, going 53 yards in just four plays. On third down, Lindamood tried to go over the left side, found nothing there, reversed his field all the way to the right sidelines and went 34 yards before being stopped at the 12 yard line. On the next play Roberts drilled a strike to Johnson in the end zone to make it 33-28 in favor of PHS. Coach Don Reeves then rolled the dice on a two-point conversion attempt and Roberts made good by faking a pitch to Lindamood, kept the ball and dove into the end zone for a 35-28 lead with 10:41 left in the game.
Riverside ran four minutes off the clock but on fourth down from the PHS 27, Rumberg tried to hit Reed in the end zone only to have Johnson break up the play and give the ball back to the Big Reds with 6:48 on the clock.
With Parkersburg needing some insurance points, Roberts hit Thomas with a 17 yard completion and Riverside was hit with a roughing the passer penalty on the same play for an additional 15 stripes that moved the ball to the Warrior 28. A 12 yard run by Lindamood on which he hurdled a would-be defender near the sideline, put the ball on the 14 but three more plays netted minus four yards and Roney came on to kick a 34 yard field goal with 1:45 remaining that all but sealed the victory.
That was because Riverside came back to score with 11.2 seconds remaining on a 10 yard pass to Matt Allen that cut the lead to 38-35 with the extra point kick.
But when Andrew Butcher fell on the attempted onside kick for the Big Reds, the game required just one quarterback kneel-down by Roberts.
