Record-Setting Night For Lindamood; Johnson Makes Big Debut Against St. Albans
[ Game Photos ]
ST. ALBANS - Adam Lindamood enjoyed a record-setting night and newcomer Kwante Johnson had a memorable debut as a Big Red to lead Parkersburg to a 42-22 triumph over St. Albans here Friday night.
Lindamood broke loose for 259 yards rushing on just 13 carries, including the longest touchdown run in the long history of Parkersburg High School - a 97 yard sprint in the third quarter. In all he ran for four touchdowns.
His rushing total was the seventh highest single game total in school history, surpassing Allan Wasonga's 256 total in 2009 against Capital (achieved on 29 carries). The school record is 299 yards set by Ryan Holbert in 2002 while Lindamood's brother Matt has the second and third highest single game totals with 297 and 287 (both in 2007). But none of the runners ahead of him did it on fewer carries. Only Johnny Morris with 271 yards in 1943 against Marietta) comes close with 14 carries.
Lindamood undoubtedly set a record for most yards in a single quarter as he touched the ball just twice in the third quarter, scoring on the 72 yarder on the first play of the second half and then going for the record on his next carry, which came over nine minutes later. Those two runs totaled 169 yards.
On the first long TD Lindamood bowled over the St. Albans safety at the PHS 40 and then out-ran the rest of the defenders. The record breaker was set up by a punt to the PHS six yard line followed by a half-the-distance penalty against PHS. But Lindamood broke over the left side and was off the races, again out-running the Red Dragon defenders who were chasing him.
To end the night the PHS senior scored the final time he touched the ball, going 30 yards with 4:51 remaining as he showed some of his patented moves by spinning and stepping out of a would-be tackler at the 15 yard line.
The 97 yarder broke the record of 95 yards set in 1940 by Lindamood's grandfather, Fred Earley, against Charleston - a mark which was later tied by Jim Burke in 1962 against Stonewall Jackson.
But Lindamood was not the only story in Parkersburg's third win of the season. Johnson moved here from Pittsburgh and was not eligible until this game because he did not have the required 14 practices. But once the speedy senior got on the field he made an immediate impact in leading the PHS defense with a whopping 17 tackles (five of them solo) and two interceptions as well as making two receptions on offense for 46 yards.
In addition to Lindamood and Johnson, PHS got a fine all-around game from Chandler Hamilton, who ran for 107 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns while also contributing eight tackles on defense.
The first half had little excitement for either team. St. Albans got on the board first when Noah Reed found Dakota Kelly deep over the middle for a 79 yard pass and run play touchdown with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
PHS quickly answered as Hamilton had a 27 yard kickoff return to his own 42 yard line and and the Big Reds got 15 more yards on a facemask penalty. Nine running plays later Hamilton went up the middle from the four and Cody Roney kicked the first of his six extra points for a 7-6 lead.
One play later PHS was back in business after Johnson grabbed an interception at the St. Albans 40 yard line but the teams traded punts for a few series because Johnson made his presence felt on offense with a 39 yard one-hand pass reception from Aaron Roberts that set up Lindamood's 16 yard TD run behind Corey Burdette's block for a 14-6 lead with 2:57 left in the first half.
In the second half there was lots to be excited about on both sidelines as Lindamood had his two big runs while St. Albans moved the ball well behind its no-huddle offense which produced a 25 yard scoring run by Drew Kirby and a 16-play, 69-yard drive that culminated in 250 pound Michael Cain's four yard run that cut the Big Reds' margin to 28-22 with 9:54 still left to play.
But PHS responded to that threat by putting together a 56-yard drive that took seven plays with Hamilton breaking loose for a 26 yard run and a 22 yard pass reception. Roberts did the honors with a one yard sneak with just under eight minutes remaining.
St. Albans threatened to retaliate, driving to the PHS 31 but Johnson came up with an interception in the end zone and the Big Reds took just three plays to cover 80 yards with Lindamood going for seven, then Hamilton for 43 and finally Lindamood stepping over, around and through the defense for the final 30 yards for the insurance touchdown.
The win gives PHS 794 all-time victories heading into next week's home game with Riverside.
