South Makes Big Plays to Beat Big Reds, 28-18

Parkersburg could not hold a 10-0 lead as Parkersburg South made several big plays to rally and post a 28-18 victory before 8,000 fans at the 46th Battle of Parkersburg.

After dominating the first quarter the Big Reds allowed the Patriots to make nine plays covering 20 yards or more, including a 35 yard interception return for a touchdown, while generating only one such play themselves after the first period.

The win upped South's record to 4-3 while dropping PHS to the same slate. Both teams must win two of their final three games to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Dylan Thomas had a 13 yard punt return to start things for the Big Reds after forcing South to kick from its own 26. Beginning from the 50, PHS got a 35 yard gain from Kwante Johnson on a great shovel pass cutback run. That set up a first and goal from the two and after two runs by Adam Lindamood carried the ball to the three, Matt Santer faked a shovel toss and scored the game's first touchdown on a run with 7:05 on the clock. Cody Roney kicked the extra point.

The Big Reds were back in business two plays later after a South fumble was recovered by Johnson on the Patriot 33 yard line. Although they struggled, the Big Reds were able to move to a first and goal from the nine only to have to settle for a 24 yard field goal by Roney with 1:33 remaining in the first period.

Although PHS had great field position thanks to a sack by Andrew Nichols and an interception by Austin Alatore on a ball that was tipped first by the South receiver and then Johnson for PHS before the Big Red senior wound up with the ball.

It wasn't until midway through the second period that South was able to put together a 75 yard scoring drive that included a 27 yard scamper by South's Tyler Bolen, the son of retiring head coach Jon Bolen. Bolen eventually got South on the board with a one yard quarterback sneak as he leaped over the line with 4:51 remaining in the half. Isaac Boles kicked the extra point to make it 10-7.

That was the way the first half ended with PHS generating just 76 yards in total offense, only 19 on the ground, and both teams completed just eight of 26 passes.

The Big Reds got the ball to start the second half and picked up three first downs on a drive that looked like it might produce some points but fizzled on the South 39.

Tyler Foster pinned the Pats on their own nine yard line with his punt but a 23 yard pass to Tyler Rouse and a 20 yard run by Jordan Quiocho got them out of their hole and then Braxton Johnson broke loose for a 41 yard scoring run that put them up 14-10 with 4:03 left in the third quarter.

Two plays later came the real turning point in the game as PHS quarterback Aaron Roberts tried to hit Santer with a pass near the 35 yard line and South senior Logan Cox, an all-state safety, stepped in front of the intended receiver and raced in for the touchdown that made it 21-10 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

While the momentum had definitely turned in South's favor, the Big Reds quickly answered and put themselves back in contention as Lindamood broke away for a 65 yard cutback run all the way to the South seven yard line.

Two plays later Chandler Hamilton took a pitch and got to the flag from five yards out for the touchdown with 1:55 remaining. After a timeout, Roberts executed a perfect pass out of the backfield to blocker Corey Burdette for the two-point conversion that made the score only a field goal's difference at 21-18.

PHS forced South to punt twice but could muster only one first down itself on a 19 yard pass from Roberts to Johnson and also had to punt twice.

Taking over on its 41 yard line with 4:22 left in the game, South got a 20 yard run by Cox and then broke Quiocho loose for the clinching TD on a 44 yard run. Boles' kick made it 28-18 and the Big Reds's last chance was snuffed out with another interception by Cox near midfield with 2:19 remaining.

A 28 yard run by Quiocho got the first down that South needed to kneel out the remainder of the contest.

Quiocho finished with 161 yards on 13 carries as South finished with 310 yards on the ground and 47 through the air as Bolen completed just five of 15 passes with one interception.

PHS finished with 190 yards in total offense as Lindamood rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries while Roberts completed 10 of 24 passes for 90 yards and two interceptions. Johnson caught four passes for 77 yards for PHS.

Defensive leaders for South were Cody Hively and Mack White with nine and eight tackles respectively. White was not even expected to play in the game because of an injury. Lindamood led PHS with eight stops.
