Unbeaten Highlanders Hand Big Reds 44-0 Loss

Huntington, ranked third in the state and rightfully so, did not need the help that Parkersburg provided Friday night at Stadium Field as the unbeaten Highlanders handed the Big Reds a 44-0 whitewashing.

PHS had seven turnovers and produced just 189 yards in total offense as they made it easy for the Highlanders to record their fourth win of the season and third straight over the Big Reds in the last two seasons. It was only the second time since 2002 that the Big Reds had been shut out.

The Big Reds, in falling to 2-2 on the season, fumbled the ball away four times in the first three quarters, including once on a kickoff return as Huntington chose to try line drive squib kicks on most of its kickoffs. Then, in the fourth quarter, PHS quarterback Aaron Roberts threw three interceptions on his last five pass attempts after going 102 previous tries this season without having a pass picked off.

The Highlanders ran 69 offensive plays to 47 for PHS and amassed 386 yards in total offense with 325 of it coming on the ground. The Big Reds managed just 65 yards on 19 rushes and Roberts completed 13 of 28 passes for 124 yards. Huntington quarterback Mark Shaver ran for 111 yards and one TD on 11 carries and passed for 45 more, completing three of 11 passes. Paden Christian and Donte Hendricks both scored two touchdowns for the winners while rushing for 69 and 54 yards respectively.

Huntington's first string defense has not allowed a touchdown this season.

The visitors took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards on just seven plays, the last six on the ground with Christian going up the middle from five yards out with 9:21 left in the first quarter.

PHS went three-and-punt and Huntington put together a 65 yard drive that took 12 plays before settling for a 26 yard field goal by Zach Stevens.

After another three-and-punt scenario for PHS, the visitors had to start from their own 20 thanks to a 62 yard punt by Kyle Foster (who averaged 48 yards on three kicks for the night). This time it took them 11 plays to get a touchdown on a six yard run by Hendricks.

Chandler Hamilton had a 50 yard kickoff return on the ensuing play but it was called back to the eight yard line by a penalty and PHS promptly fumbled the ball away at the six. The Highlanders took just two plays to score and make it 23-0 after the blocked kick. With 8:08 left in the first half, PHS had run just seven offensive plays and had minus two yards in offense.

The Big Reds showed some life on its next series as Hamilton broke loose for a 43 yard run and Roberts hit Dylan Thomas with a 16 yard completion that helped move the ball to the 13 yard line but the drive fizzled and Cody Roney came on to try a 32 yard field goal. His kick had plenty of distance but hit the top of the right upright and bounced back.

The PHS defense held on three plays and forced a punt but the Highlanders got off a 72 yard punt to the Big Red six yard line. Five plays later Roberts fumbled and Huntington had the ball on the PHS 23 yard line.

On fourth down from the 23 after three straight incompletions, Shaver scrambled away for 18 yards and a first down at the five. Christian then scored untouched over left tackle to make it 30-0 after the PAT kick.

Huntington scored on both of its first two possessions of the second half, going 71 yards on eight plays to score on Shaver's sneak from the one and then took advantage of a recovery on the kickoff at the Parkersburg 22. Four plays later it was defensive standout Marcus Eller doing the honors up the middle from two yards out with 5:57 left in the third quarter.

The Highlanders converted on all seven of their red zone scoring chances.

Parkersburg was playing without two-way veteran starter Skyler Terrell, injured in practice this week, and lost Matt Santer in the first quarter with an arm injury.
