Big Reds Start Fast Then Hold On To Beat Pass-Happy Hurricane, 42-28
An incredibly fast start led by sophomore Bryson Singer and senior Braeden Mason enabled the Parkersburg Big Reds to hold off a Hurricane aerial assault that turned a rout into a close game that PHS won by a 42-28 score to remain unbeaten at home Friday night at Stadium Field.
The Big Reds put 28 points on the board in a first quarter that lasted 42 minutes and seemed to be able to score at will against a Hurricane defense that held Huntington completely in check a week ago.
But apparently the Big Reds like to make things interesting as they allowed Hurricane to nearly wipe out a comfortable lead by giving up three third quarter touchdowns to make it a one score contest before finally putting the finishing touches on their fourth win in seven outings and beating the Redskins for the seventh time in eight tries.
While Singer was busy piling up 412 yards in total offense for the second most ever in a game by a Big Red, Mason was setting a record with a 91 yard touchdown pass reception and scored three times on passes from Singer, who also threw a fourth TD to sophomore Carter King. Singer ran for 175 yards and one touchdown while completing half his 20 pass attempts for another 237 yards and four scores. His yardage fell just two shy of the school record of 414 yards in total offense by Rick Marshall in 1988. Mason, who caught six passes for 158 yards in all, broke the record of 88 yards set in in 2014 by Dan Fox and tied in 2017 by Brenton Strange.
Hurricane’s Austin Womack came into the game with over 1,400 passing yards but must have had a very tired arm after throwing 66 passes against the Big Reds – completing an amazing 40 for 485 yards and all four touchdowns.
Overall there were 44 first downs in the game and 979 yards in total offense with seven scoring plays of 30 yards or more.
The first play of the game gave an indication of what was to come in the three-hour marathon as Singer broke loose for a 47 yard run. Five plays later he hit Mason with a 13 yard scoring pass and 2:03 into the game PHS was up 7-0.
The PHS defense, which came up with three turnovers, held Hurricane to a three-and-out and after a punt put the ball on the Big Reds’ 32, it took Singer just two plays to produce another touchdown. After running for 31 yards, he found classmate Carter King for a 37 yard pass over the middle to the end zone with 8:36 on the first quarter clock.
Hurricane answered with a 65 yard bomb for a score on the next offensive play but PHS quickly answered with an 89-yard, 11-play drive with Singer covering the last 30 on a run which saw a great block by Matt Curry. The play before was a 23 yard catch and run by King with Sam Potts and Anthony Craig making key blocks.
An outstanding defensive play by Justin Waybright stopped Hurricane on a fourth down play on the Redskins next possession. The visitors tried a reverse but Waybright came through from his end position to tackle the runner for a seven yard loss. Hurricane converted six of nine fourth down plays during the game.
PHS again moved the ball with ease, going 49 yards in six plays with Singer hitting Mason for six points from 14 yard away with 1:27 left in the quarter. With just over 10 minutes elapsed in the game, Singer had already amassed 283 yards in total offense and PHS held a 28-7 lead.
An interception ended the PHS run of perfection on offense but Mason had his record-setting TD reception with 5:28 left in the half to make it 35-7. He got behind the Hurricane secondary and Singer threw a perfect strike for the score.
At the half PHS had 462 yards in total offense with Singer collecting 387 of them.
But things changed dramatically in the second half.
With Womack putting the ball in the air on almost every play, the Redskins scored on three straight possessions to make it 35-28 with just 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter began the Big Red defense came back to life and a fumble recovery by Kyle Grant gave PHs the ball back on Hurricane six yard line. A one-yard run by Singer was followed by Craig’s plunge up the middle with 7:59 left in the contest to make it 42-28 and give the home team some breathing room.
An interception by Potts halted Hurricane’s ensuing drive and put PHS on the Hurricane 21. But on fourth and one PHS could not convert and Hurricane had the ball back for one last, long attempt to score. An incredible 21 plays later the Redskins were finished at the PHS three yard line as Womack’s 66th pass of the night fell incomplete.
Another sophomore, Xadrian Snodgrass, unofficially led PHS with eight tackles while Potts and C.J. Wade had seven each. Although the Big Reds came into the game with 15 sacks as a team they did not record a sack against Womack and his veteran offensive line.
