Hartman Leads Musselman Over PHS

INWOOD, WV – Even on a bothersome right ankle, Musselman junior Blake Hartman proved to be the biggest thorn in the side of the Parkersburg Big Reds as he ran, caught and tackled his team to a 48-29 victory here Friday night in the first round of the Class AAA football playoffs.
Hartman, who came into the game with 33 touchdowns, tacked four more onto his total as he ran for an even 300 yards on 26 carries while also catching a couple of passes, returned kicks and punts for another 101 yards for a 415 all-purpose total and was the key defender in the second half with his tackles, passes knocked down and sack.
The win means 9-2 Musselman will make a return trip to Parkersburg for a second-round meeting with Parkersburg South. PHS ends with a 5-6 record.
The Big Reds got a big game from sophomore Bryson Singer who ran for a season-high 283 yards on 24 carries and scored one touchdown while completing eight of 21 passes for 107 yards and three more touchdowns. Two of the TD receptions went to Matt Curry and the other to fellow 10th grader Carter King.
Musselman finished with 506 yards in total offense, 487 of it on the ground, while Parkersburg had 436 yards. Both teams lost three fumbles while PHS senior Sam Potts had two interceptions, giving him nine on the year for the second highest single-season total in Big Red history.
It took Hartman just 19 seconds to make his presence felt as he raced 65 yards on the first play from scrimmage to put the Applemen up 8-0 as he also ran for the two-point conversion.
After a flurry of turnovers, PHS put together a nine-play, 79-yard drive to pull within a point at 8-7. A 40 yard run by Singer was the big play with the drive ending on a 20 yard scoring toss to Curry.
Musselman took just over three minutes to score again on a 65-yard, six play drive that saw Hartman reach the end zone from 24 yards away with 2:31 left in the first quarter.
After Jim Shrewsbury recovered a Musselman fumble on the PHS 21, Singer broke loose on a 79 yard touchdown run as he sprinted around right end and up the sideline. He then passed to Curry for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 15-all just 17 seconds into the second quarter.
The home team went ahead 22-15 on a one yard run by Caleb Hardy that was set up by Hartman’s 39 yard carry. But the Big Reds answered again thanks to a 62 yard run by Singer that set up his 20 yard scoring pass to Curry with 7:30 left in the first half.
Potts ended Musselman’s next threat with an interception of a Hartman halfback pass at the three yard line but the Big Reds were stopped on their attempt to take the lead when a fourth-down pass to the Musselman 24 yard line came up two yards short with 1:01 left in the quarter.
A 21-yard run by Hardman to the PHS 15 yard line set up Luke Barger’s 31 yard field goal with four seconds left in the half.
The second half saw Parkersburg’s bad luck return as Curry’s punt to the Musselman 45 yard line on the first series was booted by Hartman, who accidently kicked the ball 35 yards up the field before it was recovered by the Applemen, who went on to score on a 23 yard run by Hartman to go up 32-22.
A sack by Hartman enabled the Applemen to force another Curry punt and the hosts put together a 49-yard, 11-play drive to score on another 31 yard field goal by Barger with 56 seconds left in the third period to take a 35-22 lead.
The Big Reds were not through as they scored after a 72-yard drive when Singer rolled left and his King in stride at the back of the end zone on a 38 yard play with 9:07 left in the contest to trim the margin to 35-29.
But Musselman scored again on the next series on a 29 yard run by Hartman and get recovered a fumbled to stop PHS on the ensuing set of plays. A 29-yard run by Hartman made it 41-29 with 6:22 left in the game.
C.J. Wade forced his second fumble of the night to give the Big Reds the ball back with 4:34 left to play but an illegal pass penalty hurt PHS in its attempt to close the gap and the Big Reds wound up turning the ball over on downs at midfield with 3:16 left to play. Game film showed Singer was a yard behind the line of scrimmage when he released the ball on the pass which was ruled by the officials as coming beyond the line.
A 30-yard breakaway by Applemen quarterback Caleb Hardy set up his two-yard scoring run with 1:48 left to ice the game.
Casey Mahoney and Wade led the Big Reds defensively with 12 and 11 tackles respectively while Justin Waybright, Gage Fiore and Potts all had nine tackles.
