Seven Turnovers Doom Big Reds

In 44-13 Loss To Highlanders

The difference in the game between Huntington and Parkersburg Friday night at Stadium Field can easily be summed up in two words – seven turnovers.
The Big Reds lost the ball seven times against the Highlanders and the result was a 44-13 loss that marked the ninth time in a row that Huntington has beaten PHS. Both teams are now 5-4 on the year with PHS coming into the contest ranked eighth and Huntington a close 10th.
By throwing four interceptions and losing three of five fumbles the Big Reds gave themselves little chance of beating the Highlanders, who scored after five of the turnovers.
The Big Reds trailed 13-6 midway through the second period before the turnover bug really bit and the second half became a comedy of errors with five of the PHS miscues helping to produce 24 points and a running clock over the last eight minutes of the game.
Huntington drove 69 yards on its opening possession to score on Tajan Blackwell’s one yard run and put together a 45-yard drive to score on a 39 yard pass to Geronimo Mitchell early in the second period.
The Big Reds answered with a six yard run by Bryson Singer with 7:42 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 13-6. Sophomore Singer ran for 61 yards on 10 attempts and passed for 56 yards but suffered all four interceptions to spoil a night which saw him become the first player in PHS history to run and pass for over 1,000 yards in a single season.
The second half saw the Highlanders take advantage of every Parkersburg gift and three more times on the ground and add a 33 yard field goal. The Big Reds got on the board with 1:31 left when Michael Owen passed to Julian Martin for a 25 yard touchdown.
Brockton Blair ran for 87 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown while Blackwell ran for 62 yards and two touchdowns while passing for 122 yards.
C.J. Wade was the unofficial tackle leader with nine while Justin Waybright had eight including a sack.
