PHS "Takes" 27-21 Win From Mohigans

Parkersburg took the ball away from Morgantown four times Friday night at Stadium Field and turned two of them into touchdowns as the 10th ranked Big Reds avenged last year's defeat with a 27-21 victory over the eighth-ranked and highly regarded Mohigans.

The turnovers proved to be the big difference while sophomore quarterback Bryson Singer produced a century double-double by rushing for 155 yards and passing for 126 to pace the Big Reds. And PHS played half the game without top offensive weapon Braeden Mason, who sat out the middle of the game with back spasms. Mason still caught four passes for 44 yards.

Matt Curry added pass receiving to his punting skills and wound up catching a pair of scoring throws, one each from Singer and Michael Owen. Kyle Moore caught another TD from Singer while Justin Waybright had the game's first touchdown on a two-yard run.

Xadrian Snodgrass officially had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery while C.J. Wade had 13 stops (2 sacks) and Gage Fiore nine tackles and an interception. Luke Read also had an interception and Aaron Kufpner a fumble recovery.

Morgantown took the opening kickoff completed two straight passes and the game then went into a 45-minute lightning delay.

When play resumed the teams swapped possessions before Fiore intercepted for PHS and gave the ball on the Morgantown 12 yard line. An 11-yard run by Xadrian Snodgrass, playing in place of injured Anthony Craig, put the ball on the one and two plays later Waybright ran over left guard for the touchdown with 7:01 on the first quarter clock. Sam Potts' extra point kick hit the upright and bounced away.

Another Morgantown turnover came just two minutes later when Kupfner recovered a fumble on the visitors' 48 yard line. A 10-yard run by Waybright an a 15 yard pass from Owen to Mason set up the touchdown. The score came after a great ball fake by Owen which helped Curry get open in the left corner of the end zone. Owen then threw to Curry for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

Morgantown got on the board next on a 73-yard, nine-play drive that was sparked by a 35 yard pass from Cameron Rice to Preston Fox and a 20 yard run by Jace Whetsell. Jackson Wolfe got the TD on a two-yard plunge and John McConnell's kick made it 14-7 with 10:20 left in the half.

The Big Reds then put together an 80-yard drive of their own, taking 11 plays to score on Singer's 38 yard pass to Moore. Overcoming four penalties, PHS got four runs for 31 yards from Singer on the drive. Potts' kick made it 21-7 with 6:31 on the clock.

A nine-yard punt by Morgantown, gave PHS the ball back on its own 35 and a 37-yard deep pass to Potts set up Singer's 16-yard toss over the middle to a wide open Curry for the fourth TD with 24 seconds left before the half and ran the score to 27-7 with Potts' PAT kick being blocked.

The third quarter saw PHS stick mainly to the ground while Morgantown managed just one first down against a Big Red defense led by Fiore and Wade. The Mohigans threatened by driving to the PHS nine yard line but Snodgrass recovered a fumble with 2:55 left in the period.

Big runs by Gunner Latimore and Quinn Thompson produced the second Morgantown touchdown with 8:42 left in the game and 1:33 later the visitors scored again thanks to an onside kick recovery at the Big Red 31 yard line. The kick attempt was aided by a roughing the kicker penalty from the extra point try that allowed the visitors to kickoff from the PHS 45.

The Big Reds were able to run three minutes off the clock but ran out of downs on the Morgantown 25. Singer had an incredible 45 yard run on the first play from scrimmage that took the ball from his own 13 to the Morgantown 42. From an open backfield the sophomore sprinted right to the sidelines and cut back all the way to the left sidelines before being run out of bounds.

Starting from their 25 with 3:58 left in the game, the Mohigans had a big 46-yard pass play to Fox from Gunner Latimore, who replaced returning quarterback Rice in the second quarter. But two plays after Rice came back on the field to replace an injured Latimore, he threw a deep pass over the middle that Luke Read not only intercepted but returned 50 yards with 2:56 on the clock.

From the Morgantown 35, PHS was able to run the clock out by picking up a first down with Singer rushing four times for 26 yards.
