Martinsburg Speed Spells End To Big Reds Season, 49-20

Game Statistics / Game Photos

MARTINSBURG – Martinsburg’s team speed helped produce three first half touchdowns and spelled an end to Parkersburg’s season here Saturday afternoon as the number one ranked Bulldogs won their 40th straight game by defeating the Big Reds 49-20 in a Class AAA quarterfinal playoff contest.
Four first half plays totaled 220 yards and gave the home team a 21-7 lead which blossomed into four second half scores and 607 total yards on just 54 plays. Martinsburg was led by Division I recruit Dewayne Grantham who was returning from an injury to rush for 179 yards on 11 carries and quarterback Grant Harman, who ran for 96 yards on 10 tries and passed for 172 yards on six completion sin nine attempts.
The Big Reds, who finished the year 7-5, became the first West Virginia to score a touchdown against the Bulldogs this year midway through the first quarter and added two second half scores while coming up short on two other opportunities which could have turned the contest into a high-scoring but one touchdown difference of a game.
PHS, playing without 2-year leading rusher Tyler Moler (out with a broken leg), was held to just 50 yards rushing but quarterback Jake Johnson did pass for 320 yards and two scores by hitting 20 of 33 passes. Penn State recruit Brenton Strange ended his record-setting career at PHS by catching eight passes for 112 yards (three of them spectacular receptions) and one touchdown.
The Big Reds gave up one score on a blocked punt return in the third quarter and suffered from two blown scoring opportunities of their own. Trailing 21-7 in the second quarter the Big Reds drove to the Martinsburg six yard line but were stopped on a fourth-and-one situation for no gain and turned the ball over on downs. In the fourth quarter on the Martinsburg 10, the Big Reds turned the ball over via an interception on the one yard line.
Grantham showed his talents on the second play of the game for the Bulldogs as he went up the middle 69 yards for a touchdown with just 1:12 gone in the contest.
However the Big Reds tied the game with 6:14 left in the first period after a Justin Waybright fumble recovery on the Martinsburg 45 yard line. A 27 yard pass to Braeden Mason followed by a 28 yard catch by Strange, who out-leaped the defender and came down with the ball on the one yard line. Shane Miller plowed over left guard on the next played and Issac Withrow’s extra point kick tied the game.
The teams traded punts before Harman hit Jarod Bowie on a slant pass over the middle and the Bulldog receiver out-ran the PHS secondary to the end zone to complete a 35-yard catch and run on the second play of the second quarter.
After picking up a couple of first downs, PHS had to punt again and this time Harman found Naieem Kearney on a screen pass up the left sidelines and the speedster went 74 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7.
It was then that PHS put together a 74 yard drive to the Martinsburg six only to come up a yard short.
On the next play Elijah Banks fumbled but recovered on the one yard line for Martinsburg and Harman got his team out of that hole by running for five yards and then passing for 18 yards to Bowie. A 42 yard pass to Chelo Teneval put the Bulldogs in field goal range but Chris Catlett missed a 38 yard attempt.
Martinsburg started the second half with a 30 yard run by Grantham and then Harman had a 36 yard completion to set up his three yard touchdown run to make it 28-14.
The Big Reds were able to answer with an 83-yard drive that took 14 plays and finished with a 15 yard pass to Strange in the back corner of the end zone with 6:01 on the clock in the third period. A 24-yard pass to Dylan Shaver was the big play but it was Johnson’s 10-yard scamper on fourth-and-seven at the Martinsburg 28 that kept the drive going.
Trailing by 14, PHS held the Bulldogs on their next series, forcing them to turn the ball over on downs at the PHS 24 when C.J. Wade and Jim Shrewsbury pressured the quarterback into an incomplete pass on fourth down.
But PHS was forced to punt and the kick was blocked and recovered by Adam Brinegar, who took it in for the touchdown that proved to be a momentum-turning event.
The Bulldogs tacked on another score early in the fourth quarter when Harman scrambled and wound up going 21 yards up the sidelines to make it 42-14.
PHS was able to answer on a 72 yard scoring pass play when Kionte Peacock out-leaped a defender and then sped up the sidelines untouched to make it 42-20.
Martinsburg got its seventh TD on a 60-play drive that finished with a 16 yard pass from Banks to Kearney with 5:18 left in the game.
The final PHS threat was halted with 2:39 remaining when Johnson was picked off at the one by Ricky Barrett.
