Vaughn Scores 6 Touchdowns As Knights Beat Big Reds 40-20
Game Statistics / Game Photos
All-state running back Ivan Vaughn showed why he is the leading candidate for the 2018 Kennedy Award as he ran for all six of his team's touchdowns and gained 313 yards on 27 carries to power Cabell Midland to a 40-20 victory over PHS and spoil the grand opening of the newly turfed Stadium Field.
Vaughn, who ran for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns last year against the Big Reds, was pretty much a one-man show for the unbeaten Knights as he ran over, around and spun away from would-be tacklers on scoring runs of 45, 421, 6, 1, 6, and 14 yards. He also caught a 34 yard pass for account for 347 of his teams 579 yards. He had five touchdowns at halftime as Midland built a 33-14 lead.
But despite those impressive numbers, Midland had a fight on its hands for three quarters against the injury-depleted Big Reds.
Trailing 33-14 with just 49 seconds remaining in the first half, PHS drove from its own 22 to the Midland 18 on two passes to Anthony Craig, one to Joel Butcher and a 12-yard run by Jake Johnson. But on the last play of the half Johnson's pass was intercepted on the four yard line.
But then a Tyler Moler 44 yard touchdown run just over a minute into the second half did cut the lead to 33-20 and the Big Reds held the Cabell offense in check on its next series to force a punt. PHS got the ball back on the Midland 45 and moved the ball for three first downs, the final being an 11 yard completion to Braeden Mason which put the ball on the Knights' four yard line for a first-and-goal situation.
From the Wildcat formation Moler carried to the one on the first play but three more tries by the Big Reds netted minus one yard and the home team lost a chance to pull within a touchdown by turning it over on downs at the two with 4:47 left in the third quarter.
Midland then drove 98 yards on eight plays to end Parkersburg's hopes of an upset. Running by Vaughn and quarterback Jayce Gould accounted for most of that yardage.
PHS had 22 first downs and 360 yards in total offense but also had four turnovers. Midland had three turnovers.
Moler finished with 134 yards rushing on 23 carries and one touchdown while Jake Johnson ran for 38 yards on 13 carries and completed 14 of 21 passes for 142 yards and on score to Kionte Peacock. Johnson also scored on a 54 yard halfback pass from Braeden Mason, who was the game's leading receiver with five catches for 46 yards.
It took Vaughn just 25 seconds to put Cabell on the game at the start when he broke away from 45 yards away but PHS rallied on Johnson's pass to Peacock and the Big Reds were ahead 7-6 with 9:05 left in the first quarter.
PHS held Midland on its next series to force a punt but the return was muffed and the Knights had the ball on the Big Reds' 42. The next play saw Vaughn go for the score and a 12-7 lead with 6:17 left in the first period.
The Big Reds then drove to the Cabell 12 but came up a yard short on a fourth down pass to Mason.
Midland took advantage of a 65-yard pass and run play to Vaughn's younger brother Isaiah to tack on another TD with 10:15 left before the half but again the Big Reds answered with a quick score on Mason's end-around pass to Johnson to cut the lead to 19-14. Two more scores by the senior Vaughn made it 33-14 at intermission.
Max Anderson had an interception for PHS while Jacob Woodyard recovered two fumbles. Gage Fiore had 10 tackles and C.J. Wade nine for the Big Reds while Brandon Braham forced a fumble and had two tackles for loss among his eight stops.
