Big Reds Are Back......
In Playoffs After 35-7 Win
Game Statistics/Game Photos
In the playoffs that is after a convincing 35-7 win over 8th-ranked Hurricane.
Parkersburg, which came into the game ranked 12th in the latest Class AAA ratings, will pick up 16 points for the victory over the Redskins and gained another point when Wheeling Park won.
The fifth win of the year for Big Reds will qualify them for the 16-team playoffs to start in three weeks. Two more wins and PHS will, in all probability, get a first-round home game.
Friday night’s victory was achieved by forcing the Redskins into four lost fumbles and taking advantage of three Kam Mace touchdown passes, two of them to seldom targeted Nathan Steed.
Defensively, the Big Reds held Hurricane to 181 total yards and only one touchdown, that coming after the Redskins recovered a PHS fumble on the home team’s 20 yard line. PHS even scored a defensive touchdown when Brandon Braham picked up a fumbled punt and ran it in from the eight yard line.
Hurricane came into the game averaging 26 points and over 313 yards per game in total offense.
Steed caught TD passes covering 24 and 46 yards respectively as both times he got wide open behind the Hurricane secondary.
Mace completed 20 of 26 passes for 255 yards with Jake Johnson catching seven for 58 yards and Brenton Strange catching six for 114 yards and one TD (a 67 yarder).
The other PHS score came on a three yard run by Tyler Moler, who carried the ball 21 times for 84 yards to help PHS amass 378 yards in total offense.
The first score of the game capped a 99 yard drive which started after Hurricane punter Timothy McCutcheon kicked his second straight punt to the PHS one yard line. After a pass and two runs, Mace found Strange slicing over the middle and the 6-foot-5 junior took off to the end zone.
On their next possession, the Big Reds were able to start from their own 24 and 12 plays later had advanced to the one yard line only to draw a delay of game penalty on fourth and one. Christian Axman then came on to attempt a 23 yard field goal but it was blocked.
The rest of the first half was uneventful with McCutcheon trying a 45-yard field goal for Hurricane that was well short.
The second half started with a bang as Jake Johnson returned the kickoff 88 yards to the Hurricane three yard line and on the next play Moler plowed up the middle to make it 14-0 after the extra point kick.
An exchange of fumbles proved costly for the Big Reds as their loss came on their own 20 and in two plays they scored as Payton Lunsford went up the middle virtually untouched from 13 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7.
But Hurricane returned the favor when the Redskins fumbled away a punt on the Big Red 22 yard line. On the second play Mace faked a run and found Steed all alone at the goal line for an insurance touchdown with 4:37 left in the third period.
Another Hurricane fumble, this one on the third play of the fourth quarter, results in a nearly identical pass to Steed with 11:04 left in the game. The second score came from 46 yards out and Axman’s kick made it 28-7 to put the game on ice.
Braham got the final touchdown when the snap sailed over the Hurricane punter’s head and the Big Red defender picked it up at the eight yard line and took it in for the score.
