Capital Outlasts PHS 41-19
Game Statistics / Game Pictures
Defensive football fans had to be disappointed if they watched Capital outlast Parkersburg 41-19 Friday night at Stadium Field.
But if you liked big plays and lots of yards, then it was worth the price of admission as the two teams not only combined for 60 points but put a whopping 849 yards in total offense on the statistic sheet.
Capital quarterback Kerry Martin ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as he directed an offense which had 316 yards rushing and 172 yards passing. He completed 14 of 23 passes with one interception while rushing for 74 yards on nine attempts. He was one of four Cougar backs to rush for at least 50 yards.
Meanwhile the Big Reds offense produced 361 total yards but only 45 of it came on the ground. Ethan Airhart and Bradley Craig combined to complete 22 of 35 passes for 316 yards with one interception. The yardage total was the second most in the history of PHS football, trailing only the 343 yards against Parkersburg South in 1988.
Airhart completed 20 of 31 for 223 yards while Craig was two of four for 93. Each threw a touchdown pass to Karson Snyder, who caught seven passes on the night for 92 yards but was bettered by Rylan Hamilton, who caught six passes for 118 yards.
The game started out quietly enough with the first three possessions ending in no first downs and punts. But on Capital's first play of its second series, the Cougars' Silas Nazario broke loose for a 54 yard run to the PHS 19. Four plays later Martin scored on a four yard run with 6:23 on the clock.
However, the Big Reds answered that with a 76 yard drive that took eight plays. The touchdown came when Airhart lofted a pass to Snyder one. The senior wideout out leaped a Capital defender, then turned and raced up the sideline into the end zone to complete a 46 yard play with 3:45 left in the first period.
But Capital came right back through the air with four straight pass completions totaling 57 yards and the final 21 coming on a pass to Anthony Pittman. The extra point kick made it 14-7 with just over a minute and a half left in the first quarter.
A PHS turnover set up Capital's third quarter as a fumble gave the visitors the ball at the Parkersburg 32 after a penalty wiped out a touchdown return on the play by Nate Spivey. Five plays later Deshaun James dover over from the one for the score. The extra point made it 21-7 with nearly 11 minutes left in the half.
After an exchange of punts, PHS got a 75 yard pass play from Craig to Hamilton, who took the ball to the Capital two yard line before he was caught from behind. On the next play sophomore Brenton Strange went over left guard for the touchdown with 7:05 on the clock. The extra point kick was missed and the Big Reds trailed 21-13.
An interception in the end zone by Snyder with 12 seconds left in the first half ended Capital's final drive, which had reached the 10 yard line.
The Cougars came out in the second half and went 65 yards on six plays thanks to three big plays and a pass interference call against PHS. Capital's 256-pound fullback, Kalai Clark, scored on a one yard plunge with 10:31 on the clock. The kick made it 28-13.
PHS put together a 10 play scoring drive that began late in the third quarter and was capped when Snyder made another great catch in the end zone, this time from Craig. Snyder came back to make a catch at the goal line on a high pass to complete the 18 yard play with 10:14 remaining in the game. The Big Reds tried a two-point conversion but Craig's pass was incomplete to leave the score at 28-19.
Capital added two touchdowns in the next six minutes as they seemed to run the ball with added incentive. Martin and Breece Hoff did the honors to run the score to 41-19 with 3:49 left in the contest.
The last series for PHS covered 58 yards and took 14 plays (11 of them passes) but ended with a incomplete pass on the Capital 22 with five seconds remaining.
Strange and Tyler Moler were the top tacklers for PHS with 11 and nine stops respectively.
