GW Cruises Past PHS

Parkersburg not only lost its season opener but the Big Reds may have lost their starting quarterback as well as visiting George Washington cruised to a 38-7 victory and PHS quarterback Ethan Airhart went down with an injury midway through the first quarter.

With Dah'Keeim "Nu Nu" Miller rushing for over 200 yards and scoring two touchdowns, the Patriots showed ability to move the ball through the air and on the ground. While Miller an for 204 yards on 21 carries and the Patriots piled up 408 yards on the turf, it was a surprising two-pronged passing attack that produced three touchdowns.

Alternating quarterbacks Grant Wells and Kaleb Mackey, GW completed 15 of 26 passes for 180 yards. Three different Patriots caught scoring aerials.

Meanwhile, PHS lost its quarterback with just under five minutes left in the first quarter to a knee injury. After that the Big Reds completed just six of 17 passes and suffered three interceptions.

GW scored on its second possession of the game thanks to a 37 yard run my Miller which set up a 15 yard scoring pass from Mackey to Nathan Toney.

The Big Reds then lost Airhart but still managed to drive to the GW 19 where Christian Axman had a 36 yard field goal try blocked.

The Patriots proceeded to score their second touchdown in just four plays with Mackey hitting Druw Bowen for the final 33 yards to make it 12-0 early in the second quarter.

Back-up signal caller Bradley Craig moved PHS to the GW 26 but suffered an interception with 6:15 left in the half.

That was followed by a GW 98-yard scoring drive (actually 99 yards because of a penalty) which saw Miller score on a 21 yard scamper with 2:25 on the second quarter clock.

An 88-yard drive early in the third quarter gave GW a 25-0 cushion with Miller again doing the honors for the final 18 yards.

Wells then drove the visitors for another touchdown thanks to a pair of penalties against PHS and two passes to Emmett Brooks, the final for a touchdown from eight yards out.

The Big Reds got on the board on the last play from scrimmage in the third quarter on an incredible run by Craig. The junior quarterback sprinted right, got a clearing block from Karson Snyder and then proceeded to cut back and change directions numerous times before reaching the end zone to complete a 46 yard play with just one second remaining on the clock.

Axman's extra point kick made it 32-7.

The game's final score came on a 44 yard run by Colten Rollyson when the GW runner appeared stopped after a gain of about 10 yards when his momentum was stopped by three defenders but there was no whistle and he simply spun away from then and raced on into the end zone.
