Big Reds Rap Riverside 56-6

Game Pictures | Game Statistics

The Parkersburg Big Reds scored two touchdowns in each quarter and piled up 412 yards in total offense, all on the ground, to defeat Riverside 56-6 in a Halloween Friday night game at Stadium Field.

Beating Riverside for the 10th straight time and forcing the Warriors to complete the first winless season in the history of the school, the Big Reds raised their record to 5-4 and kept their playoff hopes alive. PHS hosts Parkersburg South next and needs a victory to reach the post-season.

Tickets for the South game will go on sale at 2 p.m. Sunday at both schools. There are a limited number of seats available.

While Corey Burdette ran for three touchdowns, five other Big Reds found the end zone and the PHS defense not only limited Riverside to 82 yards in total offense but came up with four interceptions, two by Zavian Peacock.

Meanwhile, PHS tried just two passes (both incomplete) but ran the ball 54 times for 412 yards with senior Dan Fox rushing for a career-high 150 yards on just eight carries. Burdette finished with 82 yards on 16 attempts as a total of 12 different players ran the ball for the winners.

The Big Reds had the ball five times in the first half and scored on four of them.

On the first series of the game, Fox broke away for a 45 yard TD run with 9:17 on the clock. The second series took 10 running plays to cover 65 yards in 4:16 with Burdette going over the right side from two yards out for the score.

The third possession by PHS results in its only punt and Riverside proceeded to collect its only two first downs of the first half before having to punt.

The Big Reds then put together a 10-play, 76 yard drive with Burdette carrying five times including the final four with 59 seconds left on the clock to make it 20-0.

An interception and 31 yard return to the one yard line by Peacock on the very next offensive play enabled the Big Reds to score again with 16.7 seconds remaining in the half. The extra point came on a pass from regular center Charley Conley to Chase Shank. Conley lined up as a wingback, then dropped back into shotgun formation and took the snap from Shank, who eventually caught the pass back from Conley for the two-point conversion and a 28-0 halftime lead.

Peacock got his second interception on the fourth play of the second half and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown with 10:03 on the clock. Josh Roney third of four PAT kicks made it 35-0.

Riverside avoided the shutout on its next possession thanks mainly to successive 15-yard penalties against PHS on the same play from near midfield. Given the ball on the Big Red 15 after those flags were walked off, Riverside's Darius Booker raced for 15 yards and the score with 8:14 left in the third quarter. Ethan Airhart blocked the extra point attempt.

The Big Reds quickly answered that score with another touchdown in just five plays. Fox broke a 31 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and four plays later Josh Trembly reached the end zone from 15 yards out with Roney providing the PAT kick at the 5:47 mark of the third period.

Parkersburg's seventh score came with 10:56 left in the contest when Shank got a touchdown on a 26 yard run on a straight dive play. Chase Minnite kicked the first of his two extra points. The final score came when Dakoda Sims rambled in from eight yards out following a 29 yard run by Noah Weaver.
