Jackson Runs Wild as GW Beats PHS

Jacob Jackson may only be a back-up on George Washington's explosive football team but the night he had against the Parkersburg Big Reds will certainly earn him some recognition state-wide.
Playing in place of injured Draven Riffe for the second week in a row, Jackson ran for 386 yards on 31 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the fifth-ranked Patriots to their seventh win in eight tries, a 54-17 victory over PHS.
The visitors piled up 23 first downs, ran for 503 yards on 49 attempts and added another 124 yards passing for a 627 total offense night.
Meanwhile, Parkersburg dropped to 2-6 on the season with road games left against Riverside (one win) and Parkersburg South (two wins).
The Big Reds did manage to run for 260 yards with Corey Burdette returning to the lineup and gaining 79 yards on 17 carries while Dylan Thomas added 61 yards on six attempts and scored a touchdown.
Josh Trembly had the other TD for the Big Reds, who completed just one pass all night - a 37 yard grab by Dan Fox, who also made his return to the lineup after being out with a leg injury. Fox also had a one-hand interception and averaged 36 yards on three kickoff returns. Josh Roney accounted for the other PHS points with a 27 yard field goal and two extra points.
PHS was hampered by three turnovers, two fumbles and an interception.
On the first possession of the game the Big Reds drove from their own 35 to the GW 12 yard line but fumbled the ball away.
GW responded by having Jackson break away for a 63 yard run that led to his six yard touchdown over left tackle with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Chandler Hamilton blocked the extra point kick attempt, one of three PHS blocked on the night (Max Chefren and Thomas getting the other two).
On the next PHS possession, Aaron Roberts had his long pass to an open receiver downfield dropped the on fourth down at the GW 41, Burdette came up a yard short.
GW then put together a 13-play, 62 yard drive for its second TD and added a 53 yard scoring scamper by Jackson on its next series to run the lead to 21-0 with 7:39 left in the half.
Parkersburg got a field goal by Roney after driving to the GW 10 yard line but again the visitors responded with a big play touchdown run of 35 yards by quarterback Jonathan Alexander.
A 63 yard pass over the middle to Austin Giacomo on the fourth play of the second half made it 34-3 and another Big Red turnover came when Hamilton appeared to be about to break away on a long run only to have the ball pop out of his hands with GW recovering near midfield. Three plays later GW had another touchdown.
The Big Reds finally reached the end zone with 7:30 left in the third period to cap a 75 yard drive when Trembly took a pitch and went around left end for 17 yards and a touchdown. The lone pass completion of the night for PHS came on that drive when Fox stretched out to catch a Roberts' throw down the middle to the Patriots' 24 yard line.;
GW added another weaving TD run by Jackson and a short scoring pass to fullback Mason Blake to make it 54-10 before Thomas came on to break one for 41 yards which set up his five yard run with 9:13 on the clock to make the score 54-17.
On the next series, Stephen Dailey stole the ball from Jackson and returned it to the GW 28 yard line and Burdette ran it to the 18 but four plays later Burdette was stopped on a fourth and two play at the Pats' nine yard line.
With 6:08 left on the clock, GW called time out to put its second string in the game and they managed to pick up two first downs before the Big Reds halted the series.
Chase Shank was the leading tackler for PHS with 14 stops while Josh Trembly and freshman Tyler Lawrentz were each in on seven tackles.
