Big Reds Fall 21-19 to Black Eagles

South Charleston, ranked 15th in the state and averaging 46 points per game, was held scoreless in the second half by an improving Parkersburg Big Red defense Friday night but the host Black Eagles still managed to hang on to post a 21-19 victory at their new on-campus field.
The Black Eagles scored on two pass plays and a fumble recovery in the end zone in the first half but PHS hung close thanks to an outstanding effort offensively and defensively by Aaron Roberts, who returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter and added another TD on a great second-effort run in the second quarter.
In the second half Max Chefren, Austin Brown and company held South Charleston to just 41 yards in total offense and kept the Eagles out of PHS territory thanks to some great field position.
Meanwhile the Big Reds threatened to get on the board twice before finally scoring their third touchdown with 1:29 left in the game on a 14 yard pass from Roberts to Josh Trembly.
Trailing by nine, 21-12, to start the second half, PHS put South Charleston in the hole with a Kyle Foster 46 yard punt that went out of bounds on the Eagles' 11 yard line. Four plays later the Big Reds got the ball back on the SC 39 after a punt and they quickly drove to a first down on the 17 yard line thanks to the running of Roberts. But South Charleston stiffened and Josh Roney's missed a 34 yard field goal attempt on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Another three-and-out defensive effort by PHS followed with the Big Reds getting the ball at their own 48 with 10:29 on the clock. Chase Shank broke loose for an 18 yard gain by spinning away from would-be tacklers to the SC 27. Chandler Hamilton and Roberts picked up 13 yards on two carries but again the home team buckled down to hold PHS to minus five yards on three running plays. On fourth down Roberts tried a pass that was incomplete from the 19 but the Eagles were whistled for an infraction, thought to be pass interference although no signal was given. The ball was moved to the 10 yard line but it was still fourth down and five yards to go. Roberts tried throwing into the end zone but the pass was broken up with 6:37 on the clock and SC took over on downs.
The Eagles managed a couple of first downs but had to punt with two minutes remaining and Dylan Thomas returned it 26 yards to the SC 36. A run by Roberts gained six and a penalty moved the ball to the 14 from where Roberts found Trembly in the left corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Roney's kick made it 21-19 but the Eagles recovered the onside kick attempt and ran out the clock.
South Charleston's first score of the game came on a 20 pass from Kentre Grier to Fred Crozier in the end zone, which came one play after a 58 yard completion to Byron Moore. Then an interception by Marquel Hampton and return 20 yards to the PHS 32 yard line set up Grier's 21 yard TD toss to Kevin Forrest with 2:42 left in the first quarter.
PHS got on the board when Roberts stepped in front of a pass in the flat and returned it 10 yards untouched into the end zone with 1:20 left in the first period. Roney's extra point kick was low and hit the crossbar and bounced away, proving to be a costly occurrence for PHS.
Foster's punt to the SC six yard in the middle of the second quarter set up Parkersburg's second score as the Eagles had to punt from their own seven and Thomas returned the kick nine yards to the SC 33 yard line. Staying on the ground with runs by Shank, Hamilton and Trembly, PHS moved to the nine yard line and from there Roberts carried three straight times to reach the end zone with a second-effort run which saw him try up the middle then bounce outside and carry tacklers in for the touchdown with 3:54 left in the half. PHS tried for the two-point conversion but Roberts pass was knocked down in the end zone and the Big Reds trailed 14-12.
The Eagles then got a 47 yard kickoff return to the PHS 32. Three plays later pass interference was flagged against the Big Reds when the SC receiver tripped over the leg of the PHS defender. With a first down on the 14 yard line, Lemoine Richmond took the handoff up the middle but was stripped off the ball by Dan Fox on the five yard line. However, the ball bounced into the end zone and Kevin Forrest recovered for the touchdown. The extra point made it 21-12 with 2:25 on the clock.
PHS finished with 192 yards in total offense with 173 coming on the ground with Shank rushing for 72 yards and Roberts 63. However, in the air PHS was just two of 10 for 19 yards.
South Charleston had just 76 yards rushing on 33 attempts but Grier completed 14 of 27 for 194 yards.
Defensively, Chefren and Brown were in on 10 tackles each and both had two sacks. Shank and Austin Life had eight and seven stops and PHS had nine sacks overall in the contest.
