Big Reds Bounce Tigers 35-10      

Injuries to the two starting fullbacks forced defensive specialist Chase Shank to play a new position Friday night and all the Big Red junior did was score two of his team's first three touchdowns to lead Parkersburg to a 35-10 win over visiting Marietta.

Shank, the team's leading tackler on the year, scored on two runs of seven yards each to pace PHS to its ninth straight win over their ancient Ohio River rival. It was the 109th meeting of the two teams and pulled Parkersburg within three wins of the magic 800 victory total for the history of the school.

While Shank got on the board twice, quarterback Aaron Roberts used his legs instead of his arm by rushing for 152 yards on 13 carries and scored once on a 38 yard run on a fourth down play in the fourth quarter. Chandler Hamilton picked up 83 yards on 10 rushes and scored once on a 39 yard run while Josh Trembly threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Stephen Dailey to account for the other Big Red TD.

The Big Reds had a 19-9 margin in first downs and ran for 338 yards on 51 attempts in a return to the PHS traditional style of run, run and run the football some more.

Defensively the Big Reds held Marietta to 140 total yards, just 63 on the ground as they came up with four sacks, led by Austin Life's two. Shank and Max Chefren were each in on 10 tackles while Austin Brown and Austin Life had nine stops each. Roberts and Dylan Thomas had interceptions while Trembly had a fumble recovery.

The Big Reds won the toss, took the ball and executed a 14 play drive all the way to the Marietta 12 before a holding penalty and a sack of the quarterback forced them to send Josh Roney on to try a 35 yard field goal, which was short.

But two plays later Thomas came up with an interception near midfield and this time PHS took just five plays to put the ball in the end zone on Shank's first TD run as he followed the blocking of Brown and Charley Conley, got hit at the two but spun into the end zone for the six points with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter.

Big defensive plays by Zach Garrison helped force Marietta and a three-and-out situation and PHS got the ball back with 1:02 left in the quarter on its own 45 yard line. Four plays later Hamilton took an inside reverse handoff and raced 39 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Marietta ran just five offensive plays in the first quarter.

A big tackle for loss by Chefrenr and a pass broken up by Hamilton helped force another three-and-out for Marietta and the Big Reds were back in business near midfield on their own 46. Roberts immediately took off for a 20 yard gain and added another 16 yard carry four plays later to set up Shank's second TD, another run up the middle which was finished off with another spin move second effort into the end zone. Roney's kick made it 21-0 with 7:38 left in the first half.

The rest of the first half belonged to Marietta as they put together a 68 yard scoring drive aided by two penalties. The big plays were a 24 yard sweep by Quinton Coffield and a 34 yard pass reception by the same Tiger. The TD came on a one yard run by Garrett Davis.

On the last play of the first half Brent Huck kicked a 32 yard field goal to close the gap to 21-10.

The third quarter was a battle between the punters with Kyle Foster getting off 48 and 43 yard boots for the Big Reds.

PHS began the fourth quarter by driving 96 yards on 11 plays for its fourth touchdown. A roughing the kicker penalty gave PHS a first down at their own 34 and Roberts then broke off another long run, this one covering 41 yards. Three plays later Trembly tossed a 14 yard scoring pass to a wide-open Stephen Dailey.

Marietta then gave the ball back to PHS on its first offensive play when Brown forced a fumble by quarterback John Henry that was recovered by Trembly on the Parkersburg 28 yard line. A couple of penalties moved the ball back but on fourth and 19 Roberts kept the ball and ran around right end for a 38 yard touchdown to close the scoring at the 4:04 mark.
