Big Reds Win Wild Season Opener 51-40 Over Warren

If the 2013 football season opener is any indication it's going to be a wild year for the Parkersburg Big Reds.

There was the fact that it was a home game for PHS being played at Marietta College's Don Drumm Field.

There was the 91 points put on the scoreboard by both teams.

There was the 35 minute lightning delay that helped push the game to nearly three and half hours in length.

There was the three PHS touchdowns scored in the span of 71 seconds immediately after the game was resumed from the delay.

There was the 847 yards in total offense put up by the two teams. Split nearly even with PHS getting 434 and Warren 413.

There was the 256 yards on 24 penalties, again split nearly even with PHS getting 123 and Warren 133.

In other words it was a wild one from start to the long time away finish.

But, on the bright side, PHS opened with a 51-40 win as junior Dan Fox scored three touchdowns and Chandler Hamilton added a pair to lead the Big Reds to their fifth straight victory in as many tries against the Warriors, who had scored just 10 points in the previous four meetings (while PHS had put 155 on the scoreboard).

Fox caught two passes from Aaron Roberts, taking them 64 and 35 yards for touchdowns, and also picked off a pass and sped untouched 19 yards for another score.

Roberts threw just six passes but completed all six (one to the other team) for 193 yards. Meanwhile, Melvin Stubbs led a group of 11 Big Red ball carriers with 124 yards on 15 carries while Hamilton added 77 on six attempts.

On defense, Chase Shank and Corey Burdette were in on 12 tackles each.

Warren was led by Austin Klintworth with 260 yards passing and 114 yards rushing. He ran for four touchdowns among his 21 attempts while completing 16 of 29 passes in his varsity debut.

The Big Reds took just five plays to score after taking the opening kickoff. Roberts hit a streaking Fox, who juggled the ball momentarily and then raced into the end zone to complete the 64 yard play with 10:09 on the clock. Josh Roney kicked the first of six extra points.

Warren's first offensive attempt ended on the PHS 43 yard line when Andrew Nichols tackled the Warrior ball carrier for no gain on a fourth and one play.

The Big Reds then moved 48 yards on eight plays to get a 31 yard field goal by Roney with 2:46 left in the first quarter.

The Warriors got those three points back with a 20 field goal on the third play of the second period but PHS retaliated quickly with a 69-yard, eight play drive which ended on a 32 yard sprint by Chandler that was set up by a 35 yard gain on a screen pass to Austin Griffith.

That made it 17-3 but it soon became apparent that no lead would be comfortable as Warren was held on downs and punted the ball away to the Big Red 14 yard line but the Warriors came up with a fumble on the play and four plays later scored on Klintworth's two yard run with 4:03 remaining in the half. The PAT failed, leaving the score at 17-9.

Warren got the ball back on an interception by David Ryan but had to settle for a second field goal, 28 yard this time, by straight-on kicker Cole Wigal to close the gap to 17-12 on the final play of the first half.

After the PHS defense held on the first series of the second half thanks to plays from Brown and Fox, the Big Reds started from their own 30. On the second play, Roberts scrambled around, appeared to be ready to run the ball when he stopped and heaved the ball to a wide open Preston DeBerry near midfield. DeBerry ran into the end zone for what appeared to be a 70 yard touchdown only to have an illegal block thrown behind the play at the eight yard line.

Two plays and two penalties later with the ball at the Warren 25 yard line, the officials spotted lightning and sent the teams to the locker rooms with 8:51 remaining on the clock.

Apparently PHS spent the 35 minute break drawing up a new play as they came out to resume the game in an odd formation and Roberts used a wrap-around handoff to Hamilton, who 25 yards for the touchdown with 8:33 on the clock.

Still full of tricks, the Big Reds tried an onside kick that worked and got the ball back on the Warren 35. On the first play, Roberts hit Fox in stride down the left side for a touchdown with 8:23 on the clock.

Two plays and 43 second later Fox scored against when he stepped in front of a Klintworth pass on the 19 and went untouched into the end zone to run the score to 37-12 with 7:40 left in the third period.

Warren was able to answer on its next possession on a 10 yard run by Klintworth but PHS tacked on its fourth touchdown of the quarter by putting together an old-style 76 yard, 10-play drive capped by Stubbs' 24 run up the middle. Roney's kick made it 44-19 with just 27 seconds left in the period.

Led by Klintworth, Warren scored on a five yard run by its quarterback with 9:16 left in the game but PHS got its seventh TD of the night with 5:07 left in the game thanks to an interception and 33 yard return by DeBerry and a one yard run by Roberts. That ran the margin to 51-26.

Warren got two more touchdown runs by Klintworth against Parkersburg's second string defense, the final coming with 40 seconds remaining.
