Moler Leads Big Reds Over Warriors, 44-30

RIPLEY - Tyler Moler ran for 210 yards and scored the game's crucial touchdown with 1:14 left in the game to snap a 30-30 tie and lift Parkersburg to a 44-30 win over Riverside.
In a game that was close all the way but dominated in statistics by Riverside, the Big Reds won their third straight and moved closer to a home playoff game by coming up with big plays when needed. The win raised the PHS record to 6-3 and knocked playoff hopeful Riverside out of the running for a post-season berth with a final 4-6 record.
Riverside tied the score at 30-all with only 2:10 left on a 25 yard run by Caden Easterling but missed the all-important extra point. The Big Reds got the ball back and with time running out broke Moler loose up middle with a clearing block by A.J. Nolan and the speedy junior raced 56 yards to put PHS up 37-30 after Christian Axman's extra point kick.
The Warriors then fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and Jeremy Walls recovered for the Big Reds. Trying to maintain possession and run the clock out, PHS added an insurance touchdown when Shane Miller raced in from 26 yards away, running over the last defender at the goal line with just 32 seconds left in the game.
The game was moved to Ripley due to on-going concerned about the Ames plant fire and while only about one-third as many fans showed up they were treated to a wild and unusual contest all the way.
The Big Reds led 14-10 at the half despite being on the short end of some incredible statistics. Riverside had a 16-2 margin at halftime and ran 47 offensive plays to just 13 for PHS. The total yardage at the break was 240-80 in favor of the Warriors.
But PHS was on top on the scoreboard thanks to a one-yard run by Miller, who carried the ball just three times in the game but scored all three times, and an 83 yard fumble recovery return by Brenton Strange.
Meanwhile, Riverside was methodical with its running and short passing game, collecting a field goal and a one-yard run by quarterback Mark Scites that came with just 28 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Warriors got on the board first with a 32-yard field goal with 3:32 left in the first quarter but PHS answered with a 63 yard drive that took just six plays thanks to a 23 yard pass from Kam Mace to Jake Johnson and a great 30 yard reception by Nathan Steed, who won a leaping battle with the Riverside defender. That set up Miller's TD plunge three plays later.
Riverside then drove from its own 28 to the Parkersburg 12 when Scites threw a lateral pass that was bobbled and Strange was there to pick it up and race all the way to the end zone. Axman's kick made it 14-3.
The Big Reds had a 60 yard touchdown run by Moler called back by a holding penalty and Riverside then drove 78 yards in 13 plays to score on a quarterback sneak with 28 ticks left in the first half. The kick made it 14-10.
It took just one play in the second half for PHS to get some breathing room as Moler went up the middle, broke into the open and out-ran the defenders 66 yards to paydirt with the extra point kick making it 21-10 with just 17 seconds elapsed.
The Big Reds increased their lead to 27-10 after a fumble recovery by Steed on the Riverside 32 on the very first offensive play by the Warriors, who would lose three fumbles and throw one interception during the game.
A 19 yard run by Moler set up Miller's second one-yard TD run with 9:28 on the third period clock and the PAT made it look like PHS was going to pull away.
But Riverside would not go quietly as the Warriors drove 63 yards in 11 plays to score on a one yard run by Gage Lanham which cut the lead to 27-17.
The Big Reds got a 37 yard field goal by Axman that barely cleared the crossbar with 2:19 left in the third quarter to make it 30-17 but Riverside would score two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game.
After a Jake Johnson interception ended Riverside's first drive of the fourth quarter the Warriors got the ball back via a punt and went 77 yards in eight plays with Scites hitting Jacob Clark on a 15-yard pass and run play then scored in just three plays to cover 80 yards on their next possession. A 40-yard pas play set up Caden Easterling's 25 yard run down the right sidelines but Cameron Powell shanked the extra point kick and the game was tied with just 2:10 remaining.
While Moler's 210 yards rushing on 21 carries was one of the few bright spots on offense for the winners, Riverside finished with a 33-11 margin in first downs, a 505-372 yards in total yards and ran 82 offensive plays to just 44 for PHS. Riverside had a 14-minute advantage in time of possession.
Defensively for PHS, Wyatt Strobl had 16 unofficial tackles while Gage Fiore and Strange added 10. The Big Reds recovered three fumbles.
Scites completed 23 of 29 passes for 279 yards for Riverside. He was sacked three times and intercepted once.
